What We Believe

That, for our salvation, Jesus was crucified and died. And three days later Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to some women, then the Twelve, and then many others for 50 days. During that time he appointed the Twelve to be leaders of the new community he founded, which we call the Church, and sent them forth to “baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,” (Matthew 28:19-20) and gave them authority to forgive sins. (Matthew 16:19, 18:18; John 20:23)

That Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father in heaven, but told us “Behold, I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20) and he does so through the Church (God’s holy people) and through the Church’s sacraments. In particular, Jesus remains present in the life of the Church through the Holy Eucharist, which he left us as a perpetual memorial at the Last Supper when he said “this is my body” and “this is the chalice of my blood.” This is what we commemorate and participate in each Sunday when we gather for worship, which we call Mass.

There is so much more that the Church teaches and shares about the life and Good News of Jesus and tries to live out in imitation of him and what he taught. From the moment Jesus instituted the Church until now, the Catholic Church has been working to build the Kingdom of God “on earth as it is in heaven.” While we, as sinful people, have not always done this perfectly and have made mistakes, God’s grace and the Holy Spirit have done amazing things and are still at work in the world today, both globally and at the local level here at Gesu.

As such, our statement of belief is summed up in what we call the Nicene Creed. This creed was written by the bishops of the Church in the year 325 AD that explains who God is, how God saved us, and what the present and the future hold for us as Christian people.

Specifically, we as Catholic Christian people proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ:

That God the Father, out of love, sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world. Jesus became a man through his mother, Mary, and “was like us in all things but sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

That Jesus lived and ministered among the people of modern day Israel, then part of the Roman Empire. He went around proclaiming that the Kingdom of God was at hand, that people should repent of their sins, and that God was a loving father. He also ministered to the sick and dying, performing many miracles, healings, and even raising people from the dead.

That Jesus surrounded himself with 12 men, called Apostles, whom he taught and trained in a particular way to be leaders.

Gesu is a Roman Catholic parish and school community that is part of the global Catholic Church based in Rome and in communion with the pope, a global family of faith with 1.4 billion members.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
